From the earth to your Home

The black pottery

production process…

The art of slow craft

Every piece we offer is a celebration of heritage and patience. We focus on hand-sculpted arts & crafts that are shipped directly from our warehouse in Valencia. Our black pottery is created using traditional, ancestral techniques that honor the raw beauty of the clay. Because true elegance cannot be rushed, each handcrafted vessel tells a story of time, tradition, and handcrafted excellence.

The creation

Every piece is a tribute to time-honored traditions passed down by the Pijao people of La Chamba, Colombia. The process is entirely organic, utilizing only natural elements—clay, water, and fire—to create functional art for your home.

The first two steps of the process:

  • Sourcing the Earth: The process begins deep underground in mines along the shores of the Magdalena River, where artisans harvest a unique, specialized clay.

  • Hand-Sculpting  &  First Drying: Each piece is molded by hand using ancestral methods. Once formed, the pottery is left to dry naturally.

A Note on Timing

Our artisans work in harmony with nature. Because each item must dry naturally to prevent cracking, production times may vary depending on the seasonal weather conditions in La Chamba. We believe this patience is what makes the final product so durable.

Steps three & four:

  • Refining the Surface: A thin layer of fine red clay is applied to the dried piece. After a second drying phase, the surface is meticulously polished using stones from the river or semi-precious gems to achieve its signature smooth texture.

  • The Kiln & The Smoke: The pottery is stacked in a metal drum and baked at 900°C for ninety minutes. While the drum is still red-hot, it is filled with organic materials like leaves and dry wood and sealed.

From the Flame to Your Table

The same intense heat that gives our pottery its midnight hue also makes it incredibly resilient. Designed to withstand high temperatures, these pieces transition seamlessly from the oven to your tabletop—retaining heat beautifully while serving as a striking centerpiece for your meal.

The first use:

  • Fill your vessel halfway with water
  • Bring the water to a slow, gentle boil on the stovetop or in the oven and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the liquid cool completely inside the pot. This allows the deep-seal of any microscopic pores in the clay

The Beauty of Utility

One

Superior Heat Retention

Because the clay is dense and unglazed, it acts as a natural insulator. It heats up evenly and holds that temperature for a long time, keeping your stews, soups, or roasts piping hot well after they’ve left the stove. It’s the original “slow cooker.”

Two

Versatile Cook-and-Serve

These pieces are designed for a seamless transition. You can take a dish directly from the oven or stovetop to the dining table. Its striking obsidian finish makes it a sophisticated centerpiece, eliminating the need for extra serving platters and reducing cleanup.

Three

All-Natural & Non-Toxic

Unlike modern non-stick pans that use chemicals, the “black” in our pottery comes from a natural smoke-infusion process. It is 100% lead-free and glaze-free, ensuring that no toxins leach into your food—just the pure, earthy essence of traditional cooking.

Four

Microwave & Dishwasher Friendly

Despite its ancient origins, La Chamba pottery fits into a modern lifestyle. While we always recommend hand-washing to preserve the hand-burnished shine, these pieces are generally safe for the microwave and can handle a dishwasher cycle, making them practical for daily use.

Simple Elements, Extraordinary Results

Before the shaping begins, the raw clay must be transformed. Our artisans use a massive, hand-carved stone mortar and pestle to pulverize the sun-dried clay into a fine, workable powder. This physical labor ensures the texture is perfectly consistent, laying the foundation for a durable, crack-resistant vessel.

Once a piece is dry, our artisans spend hours hand-buffing the surface using smooth, semi-precious stones. This “burnishing” process compresses the clay molecules, creating a naturally polished, silk-smooth finish that catches the light and feels incredible to the touch.
